The Drone
Back row, from left:
Peter Aldrich, Joe Bangay (still snappin' lavverley lidees), Mike Hoy (reporter, now managing papers in Australia), Steve Curry (sports writer now of the Mail and owns a pub!); Tony Boullemier, (Daily Express sub, retired newspaper publisher and historical novelist);

Front row, from left: Geoff 'Chook' McClure (sub, later Melbourne Age sports columnist, who died of cancer in March 2010); Ray Collin (ex DX late chief sub, now retired from Daily Mail); Chris Evenden (sub, escaped to the Mirror while the going was good); Kelvin MacKenzie (oh yes it is!); Johnny Spurgin (retired as Express head printer); Bill 'Boss' Beckett (sports sub, then sports editor of a West Country daily and now living in Australia).
Tony Boullemier writes: I think the pic was taken in 1972. It was the only time Kelvin played. Bill was a good boss and we had a full fixture list, generally managing to get the better of The Sun, Mail, Telegraph, Times and BBC.

Among venues were one of the first astroturf pitches at Islington plus Worcester Park, Regents Park and Barkingside. If we ever got short of players, we had a few mates in the taxi-driving business who filled in.

All good fun, especially when we got to share a vast communal bath with David Frost after a BBC match and listened to a few top drawer anecdotes.
Can you spot Kelvin MacKenzie?
